We congratulate Xyza Cruz Bacani for her participation in NEW YORK NOW: HOME, the first photography triennial held at the Museum of the City of New York (MCNY), opening on 10 March 2023.
Exploring the concept of “Home”, the exhibition will feature photographs by 33 artists that reveal a complex understanding of home in the context of New York ’s five urban boroughs. With works ranging from documentary to conceptual photography, the artists featured in NEW YORK NOW: HOME explore the ways that the concept of a “home” can cross geographic borders, how “homes” can be safe havens for some but not for all, how “homes” can be chosen as much as they are inherited and how we experience “home” within our bodies. Collectively, the exhibition celebrates the diverse meanings of home, family, kinship and community by inviting viewers to see the city they thought they knew through the fresh eyes of the artists.
“In considering which artists to curate into the exhibition, we used an expansive rubric of what home and family are and could be. Xyza Cruz Bacani exhibits nine images from her infamous We Are Like Air: NYC series at the triennial. She has been working on documentary photography in order to magnify the voices of neighbours and immigrant workers who are often forgotten or under-represented in our society. In Liberty (2022), she captures labouring immigrant families in New York with the iconic Statue of Liberty. Throughout her nine works, she continues to document and interpret the urban landscape of immigrant workers as “new New Yorkers.”
