PROJECTS : Performance by Ting-Tong Chang

Christine Park Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in Art Central Hong Kong 2016, exhibiting in the fair's RISE and PROJECTS sectors. To celebrate its first appearance in a Hong Kong art fair the gallery will present two London-based artists with strong links to Asia, Timothy Hon Hung Lee and Ting-Tong Chang.
Timothy Hon Hung Lee, a British artist of Chinese descent, explores contrary themes of life, death, vitality and decay. At first glance his works appear to be a mixture of still life and portraiture. However, this fails to accurately describe the purpose of his paintings. Lee questions the capacity of still life and portraiture to convey meaning and using traditional Asian mediums, such as ink and rice paper, expresses the futility of the human condition. This is poignantly revealed in the tension between the fragility of the rice paper and his often violent paint application. At Art Central the gallery will present a selection of Lee's new ink paintings.
Taiwanese artist Ting-Tong Chang is known for his live performances. At Art Central Hong Kong Chang's new performance The Colosseum has been selected as part of the fair's PROJECTS sector. Throughout the six-day performance Chang will be confined within a 'colosseum' structure located near the centre of the fair. He will be unable to see the surrounding atmosphere and unable to communicate with other visitors. A second artist will move around the fair producing a series of sketches capturing the scenery of the fair. Each day these drawings will be sent to the 'colosseum'. Chang will produce a panorama of the fair based only on these sketches. The panorama will be made purely by one artist's sight and the other's imagination. Chang's drawings and animatronic sculpture Robinson will also be included in the galleries main booth. Chang's works pay particular attention to the relationship between science, technology and society, engaging and questioning the concept of a contemporary utopia. The artist uses his sense of humour to encourage audience participation and inject a satirical edge into all of his work.
